Foot and ankle unit

The Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Unit (FARU) of the Department of Orthopaedics has become a distinct clinical entity within this department. Three orthopaedic surgeons and one physician assistant work within this unit.

Research and surgery
The main emphasis of the research performed in the FARU concerns the evaluation of the outcome of foot and ankle surgical procedures and assessment of foot build and function. Studies have been performed concerning the results of various operative treatment modalities and diagnostics.

Gait and foot problems
Studies have also been performed and started using pressure measurements and gait analysis. Studies are performed concerning inlays and forefoot problems. These research modalities will also be applied to establish the outcome of treatment of foot deformities resulting from Charcot-Marie Tooth disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Experimental studies were performed regarding, amongst others, syndesmotic ankle injuries and percutaneous Achilles tendon lengthening.
